University of Illinois Medical Center Opens Walter Payton Liver Center
State-of-the-art treatment facility named in honor
of local legend

Chicago, IL (BlackNews.com) - The University of
Illinois at Chicago Medical Center at Chicago recently announced the
September 2007 opening of the Walter Payton Liver Center, a
state-of-the art treatment facility for diseases of the liver and other
abdominal organs.
In the United States, 16,000 people are diagnosed
with liver cancer every year, making it the No. 4 cause of death among
all cancers affecting the body.
The Walter Payton Liver Center, with its team of
innovative doctors and researchers, including Pier Giulianotti, MD--the
world's leading robotic surgeon--will provide cutting-edge, in-patient
medical treatments for conditions related to the liver, kidneys,
pancreas and small bowel. In addition, the Center's medical experts will
dedicate themselves to finding cures for and improving the quality of
life of their patients through the latest technology and highest
standard of care.
Walter Payton, a former Chicago Bears running back
and a two-time NFL Player of the Year and MVP, died in 1999 at the age
of 45 from a rare liver disease called primary schlerosing cholangitis (PSC),
a condition that led to cancer of the bile ducts in his liver.
Prior to his death, Payton was an advocate for organ
transplants and actively participated in an awareness campaign
highlighting the need for medical treatment of liver diseases. Payton's
legacy lives on through his wife, Connie, who operates the Walter and
Connie Payton Foundation and through the wishes of key community
leaders who were integral in establishing the Center.
