Calandra
Tate
Classification: Graduate
School: Xavier University of Louisiana
Major: Mathematics
Calandra Tate has a list of leadership involvement that covers the spectrum
from the student government to the campus ministry. Her list includes but is not
limited to two-year chair of the student government association election board,
secretary and vice-president of Xavier University’s math club, and campus
ministry peer leader.
Tate was awarded the Xavier/Loyola/Tulane Martin Luther King, Jr. Community
Service Award mainly for her efforts in implementing a cheerleading/mentor
program. The program provided mentoring and help with cheerleading for girls
grades 4-8, as well as an opportunity for them to gain some exposure to college
life.
Tate traces her tendency to lead back to her home life. "I am the oldest
of four children so I’ve always been the one that everybody looked up to and
every body had to follow," she said.
Tate has recently entered the doctoral program in Applied Mathematics at the
University of Maryland College Park. After obtaining the Ph.D., she intends to
become a college professor of Mathematics and eventually an administrator of
education. "I’d like to develop ways to make math more interesting to
children or develop programs that will get more minorities in the math
field," she said.
