Keep the Spirit of Bishop College Alive

New York, NY –
Georgetown College is hosting “A Celebration of Diversity” on
May 12, 2008 in Chicago, Ill. The event focuses on the
partnership between Georgetown College, ranked by U.S. News and
World Report as one of “America’s Best Colleges” and Bishop
College alumni; their successful efforts in renewing the spirit
of Bishop College; and the recent creation of the Bishop
Scholars Program.
The recently implemented Bishop Scholars Program allows the
child or grandchild of a Bishop College alumnus, the honor of
carrying on the tradition of Bishop Alumni and keeping the
legacy of the college alive. Also, a Bishop Scholar and can also
be recommended by a Bishop alumni.
The program
became a reality when Georgetown College “adopted” 7,000 Bishop
College alumni of the now closed Bishop College of Dallas,
Texas, a noted historically black college (HBCU)
until 1988.
Georgetown
and Bishop are creating a new legacy. Bishop scholars will gain
degrees under both the Georgetown and Bishop College name. The
first four scholars entered Georgetown in the Fall of 2007
semester, and are now making history. “We need to get the word
out because I am very excited about what it means for the
students, their parents and our students,” says Georgetown
President Dr. William Crouch Jr., pictured above. With the goal
of increasing minority enrollment and the vision of diversity,
Dr. Crouch believes, “It is going to add richness to the
experience as we interface with more African-American students.
Every opportunity we have to experience diversity makes us
better.”
“Georgetown continues
to develop their relationship with Bishop College alumni and we
believe an event like this will help us do just that,” commented
Brian Evans, Executive Director of Georgetown’s Office of
Diversity.
“Going to college has
always been in the making and coming to Georgetown as a Bishop
Legacy Scholar has landed me a spot in history,” says
Ralpheal West of Houston, Texas. West said his father has
always spoken fondly of his days at Bishop, and that’s why they
are both excited to be attending the Celebration of Diversity.
Another Bishop Legacy Scholar, Ashley Carter-Colwell
says, “I am honored to be a part of the Bishop College tradition
at Georgetown. Everyone here has been so welcoming, warm and
helpful. I know God has called us all here at this time for a
great purpose.”
Georgetown College is
committed to providing a diverse and inclusive community of
students, faculty and staff by respecting and appreciating
individual differences and commonalities. They have several
programs and partnerships within their Office of Diversity.
The Celebration is a salute to those who have chosen to make
diversity a core value in their lives and their work. The
Celebration will include a dinner at the Chicago Art
Institute followed by a concert featuring the Chicago
Sinfonietta. The Celebration starts at 5 p.m. Reservations
are required.
