Reflections
on Success

In
terms of strategies for success, what I've always adhered to is preparation. The
first preparation for the entertainment business is a college degree, which is
absolutely essential in this extremely competitive industry, especially on the
executive level. If possible, you should then continue your education to get a
higher degree. Taking classes in film and TV production will help you
tremendously. Immerse yourself in your desired field, whether music, film, or
TV. Read everything related to your field you can get yours hands on.Also
try to take advantage of internships at production companies. They may not pay
you, but at least they will enable you to get your foot in the door and provide
you with access to key people. Talk to individuals who have entered your chosen
field who have achieved success. I'm a strong believer in networking and sharing
information, which I do constantly. I also attend many business breakfasts and
lunches. I'm always asking questions, picking people's brains, such as "How
did you get the studio to give you the green light on that project when you
didn't have the required budget?" When
I attained my first record label, and started my first TV and film projects,
there were many people there to help me, especially other women. So it helps to
start building relationships early, and keep building them. Finally, you have to
be as resourceful as possible. Keep pursuing your dreams and goals, no matter
how many people turn you down. You have to learn that when people say no, that
just means you have to find another way. There are now more opportunities than
ever for minorities in the entertainment industry. There are a lot more
minority‑driven production companies. But there is still much to be done.
The number of minority talent agencies are far and far between. And, there are
still so few minorities at the network and major studio levels. So, there are
opportunities for you. But there are also opportunities you must create. So
prepare yourself.
