On Diversity Recruiting

ANGELA KNIGHT

Director of Staffing Initiatives
Merck & Company, Inc.

Angela Knight

Merck has a strong reputation in the college marketplace. We take extra care to attract, hire, develop and retain highly capable and motivated students. Merck provides strong foundations for their development (scholarships and workshops)—building on their professional skills. Our strategies are built on relationships, which is a key factor to us as well as our outreach efforts. So, if we have the right relationships in place, and we're committed to nurturing, fostering and building a "Merck" presence with organizations, then what you find is that when it's time to hire, students are more attracted and interested in us because we've gone out to them and really built the appropriate relationship. So, they look at us as an "Employer of Choice." These relationships start as early as the precollege level.

We're recruiting chemical, mechanical and industrial engineers. We also heavily recruit computer system engineers, web technologist, as well as biologists, chemists, and life science majors. We're looking for entry-level candidates who have strong GPA's. Merck hires from 450 to 500 college recruits annually. The best way to find an opportunity at Merck is to go through your career placement office on-campus or go online to merck.com/careers.
