THE
TOP 100 EMPLOYERS
And
the Majors in Demand for the Class of 2001
The
labor market prospects for the Class of 2001 remain very positive despite a
slowing economy. Because of more
"baby boomers" retiring, employers expect to expand hiring.
Confidence in the economy has weakened from last year but increased
productivity and expanding markets fuel the need for labor.
According to Michigan State University’s annual Recruiting Trends
survey, employers will hire 6% to 10% above last year.
Starting salaries will move upward by 4% to 6%.Employers
forecast a strong need for technical degrees and liberal arts graduates should
also experience an array of opportunities as employers differentiate their
technical needs. To be competitive
in the labor market, graduates need to be academically well prepared, computer
literate, and possess good communication skills. Experts confirm that success is derived from involvement in
various activities that are available both on and mostly off-campus such as internships,
study abroad, student organizations, and community service.
