Education: Morgan State University, Baltimore. Majored in Electrical and Computer Engineering; Bachelor’s 2000; Master’s 2002; Doctorate 2006

Landed the Job Through: Networking

My advice to students: Get involved, learn about the company, and participate in the programs that it offers, such as Lockheed Martin’s Leadership program.

This is What I Learned Today: How engineers can better communicate with non-technical staff.

Lockheed Martin

Diversity is a very big part of everything in the company. When I look at the teams I work on, there are men, women, people of different ages, races, ethnicities.

Q: Why engineering?

A: From the time I was in grade school, I was interested in the hands-on aspect of science. I was always a good student, but the applications in science were more appealing to me than the memorization part of learning. After all, even when those grade chool volcano experiments go bad, they’re still interesting and fun.

Q: Why did you choose to work at Lockheed Martin?

A: Lockheed Martin supported a lot of the recruitment programs where I volunteered. They provided funding, workshop speakers, mock interviews, goody bags – they just had a large presence on campus. I got to know a lot of people at the company and learned that they are one of the largest employers of undergraduate engineers in the country. When I researched
the company, I realized that this was a company I would want to work for. I spoke with one of the recruiters, gave her my resume, and got a call from them two weeks later.

Q: Has the job met your expectations?

A: It really has and more. Since I had been in school so long, eventually getting my doctorate, I didn’t expect that my job would be a direct match with the work I was doing in school. I was working on wireless communications in school and now I’m doing underwater applications of wireless communications. It’s gratifying to do the same type of work that I loved in graduate school.

Q: What does a typical work day look like?

A: The first thing is that I check a lot of e-mail. My team communicates constantly, so I need to keep on top of that. I’m at my desk most of the day, since I do a lot of the work with my office mates. I have a number of meetings throughout the day. I’m so proud of my team’s contributions. We all work together to help each other succeed.

Q: What will you be doing in five years?

A: I’d like to see myself in the same department, taking on more of a leadership role, like a task lead.

Q: Does the company have an inclusive culture?

A: It’s very inclusive. There is always a lot of diversity training going on. We’re required to do training in diversity. We just finished up diversity week, where there were a lot of groups here with booths. Diversity is a very big part of everything in the company. When I look at the teams I work on, there are men, women, people of different ages, races, ethnicities. The contributions of everyone are valued here.
