Ideal Employers

For minority students in the U.S., the most preferred employer was carmaker BMW. Other favorites include soft drink giant Coca-Cola in Atlanta and New York-based Citigroup, the students' second and third choices, respectively, the survey reports. Seattle-based software firm Microsoft and New Jersey's, IBM rounds out the top five. The accounting industry emerged as a re-newed favorite. Universum's survey reports that minority students' interest in the trade increased in 2004. Old-line accounting firms made a comeback in the rankings, thanks in part to a significant rise in interest from the Asian-American student community who put PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young among their top three employers. African-American and Hispanic American students, on the other hand, favored consumer goods and pharmaceutical companies like Johnson & Johnson and Coca-Cola. An aspect to consider when analyzing the students ideal employers is the different minority groups' industry preferences.
