Profiles Of Successful Interns

Anthony Russell
Finance Intern, Procter & Gamble
Senior, University of Virginia, Charlottesville

Developing a quarterly forecast accuracy analysis was one of three projects Anthony Russell worked on as a Finance Intern at Procter & Gamble.  This project involved everything from looking at profit forecasts to pinpointing outages. 

Russell obtained this internship after participating in several interviews and attending Procter & Gamble's Minority Winter Camp. 

He advises students looking for internships to Stay very diligent.  If you work hard, then it is not hard.   Russell plans to work at Procter & Gamble after graduating in 1999. 
 


Tammy Thomas
Former Intern JC Penny's Headquarters, Dallas 
Assistant Buyer, JC Penny's

As an assistant buyer for JC Penny's, Tammy Thomas is responsible for buys for pre-school girls tops for 2,000 stores.  This involves negotiating cost, line building, and brand management.  She owes all of this responsibility to solid undergraduate academic preparation at Xavier University of Louisiana and a 10-week internship in JC Penny's Buying Department. 

While an intern, Thomas handled entry-level duties.  She also competed against the other interns in creating a presentation for the vice-president and placed second. 

Thomas advises students to Make good use of your university's career services office, participate in mock interviews and research companies you are interested in.   In five years Thomas sees herself working in Brand/Product Development at JC Penny's.
 


Carolyn Walker
Brand Management Intern Procter & Gamble 
Graduate Student, Indiana University 

Making personal contact with the person in charge was the first step of several that Carolyn Walker took to secure an internship in Brand Management at Procter & Gamble.  As a Brand Management Intern, Walker handled the strategic follow-up of several products from initial business to consumers.  Each day brought different tasks and challenges.  

Walker advises students to Be very sure of what function you want to do, do company research, ask questions, and talk with university counselors.  

She plans to begin in brand management and move into general management at Procter & Gamble.
 


Stephen Benedict
Intern, Apple Computer Inc. 
Graduate Student, University of Michigan 

Gaining hands-on experience for Stephen Benedict, a former intern of the Display Software Group at Apple Computer, Inc., meant optimizing and rewriting legacy codes and implementing new features.  He also collaborated with other functional groups to discuss and resolve issues. 

Benedict's advice to students is to Talk to people at school who have interned at the companies you are considering.  They might be able to provide you with contacts or other information.  Also ask yourself if you would enjoy living where the job is located.  
 Benedict plans to obtain an MBA and pursue a managerial position and entrepreneurial opportunities.
 


Arlette Jefferson
Programmer Analyst Intern, Mutual of Omaha 
Graduate Student, University of Nebraska, Omaha 

To prepare for her future as a Program Analyst, Arlette Jefferson interned for the Year 2000 team within Information Services at Mutual of Omaha.  As a Program Analyst Intern, she coded COBOL programs, created spreadsheets and documents, and corresponded with vendors. 

Jefferson advises students to Take advantage of the resources around you by utilizing facilities like your career center to obtain an intern position.  
She plans to first become a Systems Analyst and eventually own a consulting firm.
