Tour The Black Collegian Online
by Scott V. Edwards
With over 1 million world wide web sites on the Internet, and over 100 million users world wide, the Internet has something for everyone. The Monster Board, JobWeb, and The Online Career Center provide career and job related information. Melanet, U.S. Black Online, and Afronet are sites targeted to the African-American audience. Peterson's, The Student Center, and U magazine have web sites that appeal to the college audience. But by surfing to THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online, you can have one site that combines the information each of the services above offers.

THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online is the electronic version of THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine, the national career/self development magazine targeted to African-American students. In addition to career planning and job search information, THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online features commentary by leading African-American writers, lifestyle/ entertainment features, general information on college life, and news of what's happening on college campuses and in the African-American community.

THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online also helps both students and professionals of color identify jobs with equal opportunity employers.

For over 26 years, THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine has provided guidance and advice to African-American collegians on career opportunities and the job search process. With THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online, our distribution goes beyond the campus, allowing us to continue providing guidance and support after graduation. We stay with collegians throughout their college years, as they become young professionals, and as they develop into experienced professionals, making THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online the career and self-development site for both collegians and professionals of color.

Now that you know about THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online, you are probably wondering how to get here. Our universal resource locator (url) is http://www.black-collegian.com. Once you've entered this url you have access to THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online. Welcome! Let me give you a tour.

The web site's major areas are displayed on the homepage. The selections are: Second Semester Super Issue; Post Resumes; Search Open Positions; Post Open Positions; Career Related; Archived Issues; Graduate/Professional School; African-American Issues; Global Study; Site Charter; X-TRA Curricular!; What's Happening; Sports Pages; and Kampus Kicks. Let's take a look at the some of the selections you might find interesting.

Our Second Semester Super Issue section includes feature stories, departments and listings covered in this issue of the magazine.

The Post Resumes feature, allows you to send your resume to be posted Online. Employers who advertise in THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Magazine and Online are given access to the database in order to search for potential employees. You can have resumes posted free of charge on this service if you have either a 2.8 or above G.P.A. or two or more years full-time work experience.

Search Open Positions gives you access to our searchable job database. This database is populated with current jobs at major employers. Using keywords, you can find jobs that match your needs and wants.

In Career Related you will find job search articles, career reports, industry reports, and other information relating to careers.

The Archived Issues selection takes you to our back issues. Once a new issue is published Online, the issue it replaces is not deleted; it is stored as a back issue for reference in the Archived Issues section.

For those of you who want to consider further academic study after graduation, THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online has Graduate/ Professional School articles, listings, and fellowship information. The Directory of Graduate & Professional Studies is a listing of specific graduate and professional schools committed to diversifying their pool of candidates. Each listing gives you a description of the graduate program, financial aid available, and contact information for applying.

Motivational readings for African Americans, Black History articles, and current events of importance to African Americans can all be found in African-American Issues. Giving students and professionals the positive mental edge needed to succeed, as well as the awareness and understanding of African American heritage is our aim here. By profiling great African Americans, THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online provides portraits of leadership that you can model for success.

Global Study is the button to press for those students who are considering study abroad. Experiencing foreign places can be one of the best experiences of a student's college career. Articles in Global Study review the pros and cons of studying abroad, give students' experiences, and answer some common questions students have when considering study abroad.

But THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online isn't just about serious information. On the lighter side, is the X-TRA Curricular! area. You can participate in Online contests, review the latest campus news and views, read or ask questions to the Campus Advisor, look at book reviews, and respond to our feedback question on important issues. This area is dedicated to what people of color want and are interested in, so if you would like to see something covered here, let us know by writing letters to the editor.

THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online can also be used to find out what's happening. What's Happening includes news, events, and information of interest to the African-American community. You are encouraged to send in events or happenings on your campus or in the community to be included in What's Happening. Sub-sections included in this area announce appointments, resignations, meetings, scholarships etc.

THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online's Sports Pages provide the essential sports activities of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities on a bi-weekly basis. Schedules, scores, standings, and information on players is available for the SIAC, CIAA, MEAC, and SWAC conferences. In addition, there are sports briefs, features, and a sports quiz contest. If you enjoy keeping up with HBCU sports or if you're a sports fanatic, this is the place for you.

Kampus Kicks is our cartoon of two African American college students at the fictitious BU (Black University). The strip is rich in graphics and filled with humor.

So there you have it, a brief tour of THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online. Please visit to get the full experience, and visit regularly to get a feel for the community. We are inviting you to participate in the development of this site by initiating two new programs that allow you to contribute. We are looking for Campus Representatives, and "Web Rangers" to assist in the development of this community resource.

For details on how to become involved, go to our web site at http://www.black-collegian.com. Join us as we work on becoming the premier, self-development, entertainment and career/job resource on the world wide web.

New features to look forward to include a conference room that allows you to post and retrieve messages, more Internet contests (scavenger hunts), and real time chat. This resource will be dedicated to fulfilling the needs of people of color on campuses in America and around the globe.

THE BLACK COLLEGIAN Online will be more than a repository of information on the web; it will be a vibrant, interactive community that empowers people of color.
