UNIFORMED SERVICES UNIVERSITY
Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences
General Information
The Uniformed Services University
(USU) Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences are offered to both civilian
and military students and are an essential part of the academic environment at
USU. The USU campus is located in Bethesda, Maryland, (a suburb of Washington,
DC), on the grounds of the National Naval Medical Center. Graduate training
programs are conducted in state-of-the-art research facilities on the USU
campus. Individual laboratories and core facilities are well equipped with the
instrumentation required for modern biomedical research. Students can enhance
their educational experiences at USU through collaboration with the National
Institutes of Health, Naval Medical Research Command, Walter Reed Army Institute
of Research, and other major institutions in the area.
Tuition and fees are waived. The
University offers stipends on a competitive basis to civilian doctoral students
who are U.S. citizens or resident aliens. Currently available USU-supported
stipends range from $25,000-$30,000 per year. The 162 students currently
enrolled in the doctoral and master's programs at USU come from all parts of the
country, all types of undergraduate academic institutions, and many different
careers.
USU is across the
street from the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of
Medicine and is convenient to the area-wide Metro System and the surrounding
Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Details of
Programs and Research Interests.
Emerging Infectious Diseases.
This interdisciplinary Program has three academic tracks within the field of
emerging infectious diseases: microbiology and immunology, pathology, and
preventive medicine, with primary interest in the pathogenesis,
host response, pathology and epidemiology of infectious diseases. Research
training emphasizes modern methods in molecular biology, cell biology and
interdisciplinary approaches. Contact the Program Director at cbroder@usuhs.edu
or visit www.usuhs.mil/eid.
Department of Medical and Clinical
Psychology. Doctoral Programs and research in this area emphasize the
application of psychology to behavioral medicine and to clinical psychology.
Study in applied areas on the interface of health, psychology, and behavior, and
in basic areas of psychology is offered. Contact the Program Director at tsbrocco@usuhs.mil
or visit http://www.usuhs.mil/mps.
Molecular and Cell Biology.
Jeff Harmon, Ph.D., Program Director. The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in
molecular and cell biology offers instruction and research training in areas
that address fundamental questions in contemporary biology. Individual faculty
members employ model systems ranging from simple prokaryotes to complex
transgenic mammals to pursue a broad spectrum of interests that includes
genomics, functional proteomics, molecular mechanisms of signal transduction,
cell-cell signaling, regulation of cell growth and division, developmental
biology, and regulation of gene expression. A rigorous academic environment,
combined with access to state-of the-art equipment and a low student to faculty
ratio, provides students with the opportunity to pursue an individualized
training program. Applicants should have a strong background in biology or
chemistry. Prospective students should contact the Program Director by e-mail at
jharmon@usuhs.edu or visit the Web at http://www.usuhs.mil/mcb.
Neuroscience Program. The Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary
Ph.D. Program for students with strong training in the biological, behavioral,
and/or physical sciences. Research includes development, regeneration, and
plasticity in the nervous system, molecular neurobiology, and adaptive responses
of the nervous system to stress, injury, and a changing environment. Integrated
interdisciplinary instruction in the development, structure, function and
pathology of the nervous system and its interaction with the environment is
provided. Contact the Program Director at rarmstrong@usuhs.edu or visit
www.usuhs.mil/nes/home.html.
Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics. Graduate programs in
public health are offered at the master's and doctoral levels. The Master of
Public Health (MPH) Program is designed for students with at least 3 years of
experience in a health-related field. The Doctorate in Public Health program
prepares individuals for leadership roles in research, teaching, or policy
development in the field of public health. In addition, a Ph.D. Program in Medical Zoology is offered for students with a
master's degree in entomology or parasitology who wish to pursue further study
in field-oriented medical parasitology or vector biology.
