The University
Texas Southern University is an Urban
comprehensive doctorate II, state supported institution located in Houston,
Texas, a metropolitan city of approximately 3 million.
The institution has a long history of involvement in domestic and
international affairs of the city and serves as the hosts of a number of major
national and international programs and conferences.
The
University’s traditional mission has been to provide its students with
superlative educational experiences focusing on teaching, research, and service.
The mission has been enlarged in scope to address the institution’s
1973 legislative designation as a “special purpose institution of higher
education for urban programming.” The
University’s traditional mission and its urban educational designation are now
fused together in order to provide students with relevant, cutting edge
educational experiences.
The
University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor’s, Master’s and
Doctorate degrees. In addition, the
University holds a number of professional accreditations and memberships in
various organizations including The Texas Association of Colleges, The American
Bar Association, and The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
The
University pursues the goals of offering quality education, vigorous service,
and creative research, and thereby has achieved a position of national
prominence. The University has a diverse student population of
approximately ten thousand students from most states and sixty foreign
countries. These students are
pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in nine schools and colleges which
offer comprehensive curricula. Those
who graduate from the University influence the world through science, business,
education, law and the fine arts. The
Alumni include presidents of colleges and universities, presidents and CEOs of
corporations, owners and entrepreneurs of businesses, elected officials,
superintendents of school districts, engineers, pharmacists, lawyers, and
judges. State, federal and alumni support help to ensure that students enrolled
at Texas Southern University will continue to receive the high level of
education and training that will prepare them to meet the challenges of future
professional careers with competence and confidence.

The Graduate School
The Graduate
School was established as a unit of Texas Southern University when the
institution was created by the Texas State Legislature in 1947. Since its establishment, the Graduate School has grown
steadily and currently offers over thirty-five different degree programs through
The College of Science and Technology, The College of Liberal Arts and
Behavioral Sciences, The College of Education and The School of Business.
The Graduate
School provides an environment which supports the pursuit of excellence in
studies, creative research, and extramural scholarly pursuits for students
seeking advanced degrees in specialized academic disciplines.
Through graduate study, a high level of scholarship is encouraged and the
qualities of industry, thoroughness and accuracy are emphasized by the
involvement of students in courses, seminars, independent study and research.
Graduate degree programs are structured to enable students to obtain
education and training in specialized academic subjects.
Graduate students are encouraged to inquire, discover and contribute
creative ideas and knowledge. Through
these experiences graduates are prepared who can provide leadership and
expertise for the betterment of human society.

Library
The Robert
James Terry Library houses 776,822 volumes plus 792 journals in the natural and
social sciences. Other holdings
include 330,066 microfilms. Policy
and environmental law references and books are kept in the library of the
Thurgood Marshall School of Law. The
law library holds 200,000 volumes and 400 current periodicals.
The
University library is in the DIALOG and Houston Area Research Library Consortium
(HARLIC) networks which give library users access to publications from other
libraries in Houston and throughout the United States.
Housing
The Residential Life and Housing
Department at Texas Southern University consists of the Greystone Apartments,
University Courtyard Apartments and the University’s traditional dormitory
communities. Living on-campus gives
close proximity to instructors, class rooms, laboratories, library and other
services. On-campus housing for
students creates a stable living environment conducive to enhancing student’s
educational, social, and personal development.
Students living off-campus are
able to obtain apartments at rates well below the national average.
Financial
Support
The Graduate School of Texas
Southern University is committed to assisting all admitted students in obtaining
financial support. Students may
apply for and may be awarded Graduate assistantships upon admission to the
Graduate School. Graduate
assistantships are also available in certain academic disciplines and may be
secured through the head of the department through which the student is pursuing
the degree. Students may also apply for Guaranteed Student Loans, scholarships,
and work-study through the Office of Financial Aid.
