Libraries serve as the consciousness of humankind — a kind of crossroads of civilization.
They shape and extend our knowledge while preserving and advancing our varied identities.
From the earliest cave paintings and stone monuments to the first organized libraries of
ancient Babylon, and from the legendary public libraries of Athens and Rome to the rich
oral traditions of West African storytelling, people have exhibited the need to collect, to
catalog, and to communicate.
Library and information science organizes and presents all knowledge currently known to
us. That's one of the factors that attracted me to this amazing profession. Also, library and
information experts translate knowledge to engage, inform, and open our minds, and fight
for our right to have access to that knowledge. Librarians are generous people, always
forming networks and expressing their eagerness to help. I feel I can travel anywhere in the
world and instantly connect with a fellow librarian, which is just one of the many

Simmons founded a library science school in 1902, a turn-of-the-century moment
between the Industrial and Information revolutions. For more than 100 years, our
graduates have been pioneers in their profession, recognized for their amazing achievements and remarkable careers. When you graduate from GSLIS, you gain
access to an extensive professional network and career resources.
The Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) is distinguished in
many ways — a national leader with top-rated faculty, prestigious alumni, and an
ideal location in either Boston or Mount Holyoke.
Simmons offers two primary academic programs: the Master of Science, and doctoral
studies in Library and Information Science. The school provides Master of Science
concentrations in archives management, preservation management, school librarianship, as well as dual-degree programs and continuing education options.
Who chooses Simmons for graduate education in library and information science?
People like you. For starters, we're all passionate about books, especially the ideas and
ideals that books convey. GSLIS men and women are explorers. As library and information professionals, they are driven to discover — and compelled by a desire to
help others find answers.
Library and information professionals have become indispensable resources in the
ever-changing social economy of the 21st century. As a result, many people are entering the profession, often moving from other careers in search of more
meaningful and stimulating work. Indeed, nearly 60 percent of GSLIS students come from other disciplines.
The Master of Science is offered on a full- or part-time basis at both our Boston and
Mount Holyoke campuses and is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of the
American Library Association. GSLIS academic and professional preparation teaches
students to analyze the information needs of their users, utilize a variety of tools and
technologies to locate and evaluate that information, and organize, manage, and preserve information so that it becomes an accessible and permanent source of
knowledge.
