Georgia Institute of Technology

GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Foreword

Atlanta annually sponsors a celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The celebration, which is held in January, offers several days of activities and includes participants from around the world.

This attraction and a partnership between the King Center and the Georgia Institute of Technology led to the development of a unique program 1992--FOCUS.

FOCUS is designed to give prospective African-American graduate students an opportunity to visit Georgia Tech and Atlanta, receive an overview of the graduate degree programs, and participate in the celebration. We hope this visit will encourage African-American students to pursue advanced degrees at the Georgia Institute of Technology. FOCUS 2002 will also provide financial alternatives and assist in the overall decision-making process when selecting a graduate school.

Under the Tower

Today, Georgia Tech is a community of more than 14,000 students from every state, as well as over 1,800 international students from over 121 countries. The campus covers more than 330 acres at the edge of downtown Atlanta. Students pursue degrees in the colleges of Architecture, Computing, Engineering, the Ivan Allen College, The Dupree College of Management and Sciences.

Tech's faculty consists of 695 full-time instructional faculty, more than 95 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees. Georgia Tech's students are among the nation's brightest young people. In 2000, Tech enrolled the third highest percentage of National Merit Scholars and the fifth highest percentage of National Achievement Scholars of all publicly supported institutions in the U.S.

With 2000 research awards exceeding $232.5 million, Georgia Tech is the South's largest industrial and engineering research agency, conducting both pure and applied research through its academic colleges and the Georgia Tech Research Institute. More than 94 interdisciplinary research centers located on campus explore areas such as nuclear medicine, environmental resources, biotechnology, microelectronics, polymers, materials handling, international strategy and policy, health systems, fusion, and construction.
