Requirements
Admission to all programs requires a baccalaureate degree
and a strong background in biology, general and organic chemistry, physics and
mathematics. Research experience, although not required, is helpful. The GRE
general test is required for the Ph.D. Program but in some Masters Programs MCAT
scores may be substituted. International students are required to also submit
the TOEFL and the GRE subject test. Applicants to the MSTP program must follow
procedures for admission to the Medical School.

Financial Aid and Tuition
Successful Ph.D. candidates receive an annual
stipend/assistantship and full tuition scholarship that is renewable on the
basis of satisfactory progress in the program. The current stipend for entering
students is $21,000, and includes health benefits. Presidential Awards for
highly qualified students provide a stipend supplement. MSTP trainees currently
receive a fellowship of $17,000 and tuition scholarship. Masters program
students, although not eligible for institutional financial aid, should file the
FAFSA to determine eligibility for federally funded grants and aid.
Facilities
In addition to general laboratory support equipment
available, core research facilities include: MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry and
2-DIGE Proteomics Facility; Transgenic Animal Facility; DNA Microarray and Gene
Chip Facility; X-ray Crystallography Core Facility; Small Animal MRI and PET
Scanning; 750 mHz NMR; Electron microscopy Facility; DNA Sequencing Facility;
Confocal Microscopy, Fluorescent Imaging, and Cell Sorting Facility; High
Throughput and Molecular Targeting Facility. The UB Center for Computational
Research (CCR) is among the top ten academic supercomputing facilities in the
country. The university supports a world-class Health Sciences Library with
on-line access to many journals. The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
computer labs provide high-speed internet access, popular word processing,
statistics, and desktop publishing programs for students. Classrooms are
computer-assisted and wi-fi capable.
