UNIVERSITY
OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE
Take a good look around you. What do you see? If you were
standing here, in our shoes, you’d see Alaska, one of the world’s last great
places. Alaska, where wilderness, wildlife, traditional cultures and the
electronic age all play a big part in the way we live. We’ve got extreme
skiing. World class theatre and dance. Ocean kayaking. An exciting new Native
Heritage Center. Big nature, big weather; big adventure, big opportunity. It’s
all here, and it could all be part of your experience at the University of
Alaska Anchorage.
UAA is a young university, with the advantages of youthful
energy, attitudes, and independence of spirit. We’re open to new ideas and new
ways of thinking. We’re creating new courses, new programs, new ways of
teaching, and new services all the time in response to a world that never sits
still. Just in the last five years we’ve added new residence halls, a new
Honors program, and new degree programs.
Living on campus can be a whole college experience of its
own. Each room in the new residence halls comes with its own telephone line,
voice mail, cable TV, and computer network connection. All students receive free
e-mail accounts and Internet access. Computer labs are equipped with both
Macintosh and PC platform computers and printers. The UAA Consortium Library is
networked with local, statewide and national library systems to provide access
to thousands of electronic journals and more than 100 million citations.

UAA offers a wide variety of graduate programs leading to
master’s degrees in arts, science, education, engineering, business
administration, public administration and social work. Our alumni testify to the
value of the programs:
Tom Anderson, owner, Alaska Strategic Consultants
Master’s, Public Administration
“The professors were outstanding… Greg Protasel,
Steve Aufrecht. They have a stellar background, they know public administration,
they’re top-notch professors. I’m excited to think I got a degree here. The
master’s fits the whole gamut, it could be taken by health administrators,
legislative aides, anybody in government, and even the legal field, like the
office manager of a district attorney’s office.
”I would say to people outside Alaska, hey, come to a program in a newer state
with newer evolving programs that are unique, like the Permanent Fund Dividend,
new law-enforcement officers, the new Native hospital – you’ll likely get
employed. A nurse in LA with low pay who wants to go to the next step could come
to the Native hospital.”
Dale Martens, president & chief executive officer, Denali Foods Inc.,
DBA Taco Bell of Alaska
Master’s, Business Administration
“[My degree] was extremely important. I use a lot of
the things I learned on an ongoing basis, primarily economics, statistics and
accounting, which are fundamental to running a small business.”
Tomo’o Enomoto, director, DeWalt Asia, a US industrial
tools manufacturer, in Tokyo
Master’s, Business Administration
“I was looking
for schools to start my MBA, and for the ones which offered small
classes… In order to learn more about the program, I called Dr. Geistauts, who
impressed me with his vision of offering classes for international students and
businesses with UAA’s logistical advantage, Pacific Rim.”
The Department of Psychology is one of the largest
departments on the UAA campus. Among our remarkable faculty members are:
Dr. Suzanne Strisik, whose primary interests are in
brief and long-term psychotherapies, the development of therapists,
multi-cultural diversity, and the link between creativity and emotion.
Dr. Bruno Kappes, who has received six excellence in
teaching awards and is a leader in statewide televised and video distance
education as well as internet instruction. This summer he will be teaching a
highly topical course entitled Psychological Reactions to Catastrophic Events.
Dr. Claudia Lampman, whose specialty is in social
psychology. Her current research interests involve the way images of male and
female sexuality are portrayed in the media. An article written by Dr. Lampman
and her students was recently accepted for publication in a prestigious academic
journal.
The Department of English
One of our current MA English students,
Gina Marolf,
completed her undergraduate degree in her home state of Kansas. The UAA
Department of English was “warm and very encouraging,” she says. They sent
notification of her acceptance early and were explicit and helpful about her
financial obligations. She was also attracted to Alaska because it was so far
away and she would be so immersed in new ideas. She has switched from Nature
Writing to Literature with an emphasis on modernism and post-modernism. She says
the teaching is “outstanding”.
AHAINA stands for African American, Hispanic, Asian,
International, and Native American students, and is a center of cultural
activity and support for all students of color. Services include peer advisors
and support groups, individualized counseling and referrals, a Multicultural
Student Center, and social activities throughout the year.
Anchorage is the state’s largest city, home to
about 41% of Alaska’s population. Major industries include oil and gas,
aviation, air cargo handling, and tourism, with large health care and retail
sectors also contributing to growth in recent years. Style-wise, we’re casual,
active, and outdoorsy much of the time, but we can dress up when we want to.
