Dear Editor:
What an issue! I am currently a
doctoral student at the University of Missouri-Columbia but a native of New
Orleans. Although I had heard of THE BLACK COLLEGIAN, I had not seen one until
running across a copy on campus a few days ago. I was moved and filled with
pride as I turned each page, recognizing that in the midst of all of the
negativity and violence plaguing our African-American youth, particularly in New
Orleans, this magazine is something positive. It is good news! THE BLACK
COLLEGIAN is something that I can be proud of because it was developed in my
hometown and written by African Americans. It is undoubtedly useful for many,
but specifically designed to address the needs of African-American students.
Speaking from a campus that is predominantly white, your magazine is an
excellent resource for African-American and other underrepresented students
here. It provides them with information regarding higher education and job
seeking that they may not see anywhere else. Also, a recent issue {Second
Semester-Feb. 2000} with articles by Dr. Ben Carson, Nikki Giovanni, and Dr.
John Hope Franklin provided great inspiration to me at a time in my graduate
career when I really needed it. Thanks! I think that your work, and that of the
staff of THE BLACK COLLEGIAN, is commendable. Continue to inspire and enlighten!
