The Art of Cullen Washington, Jr.
RedWhen he was a mere three years-old, Cullen Washington, Jr. would sit and watch his father, who was a preacher, illustrate sermons. Shortly thereafter, he picked up a pencil and began copying the pictures his dad drew.  From there, he began sketching comic book heroes, cars, cartoon characters and animals - his favorite being horses.

"Sometimes I see just a plain thing and add something to it to make it something else," said Cullen during an interview when he was nine years-old.

By the age of nine, his works, many of them pencil drawings of birds, cougars and horses, were being exhibited in one-man art shows at school, local community centers and on talk shows. During that period, according to his mother, Lue Jean Washington, Cullen would sometimes stay in his room for hours drawing pictures - not coming out until he had completed them to his satisfaction.

After earning a bachelor of arts degree from Louisiana State University, he went on to master the fields of graphic design, web design and marketing. Although he enjoys his work as a graphic designer, he has recently returned to his roots - fine art.

"When I paint, the process becomes about the spirit. Paint stains and mistakes are not really mistakes at all, but unconscious intentions," says Washington.

Describing his work as autobiographical in that it is reflective of what he sees of himself and the world around him, Washington says, "While I capture the purity and poise of my mostly young African-American subjects, the most outstanding component is their sometimes uncanny stare. I have found that it generates a biographical interactivity between the painter, the subject and the viewer. My pieces ignite memories, feelings and thoughts of youth, fun and joy."

We invite you to sit back, relax and tour our virtual art gallery featuring twelve works by Cullen Washington, Jr. For information on purchasing or exhibiting his art, please call 225-273-0998, (cel) (225) 936-4033 or email cullenw@mindspring.com.

Cullen Washington, Jr."My bachelor of arts degree and 22 years of drawing experience qualify me to be a graphic designer. My faith and 25 years of life experience qualify me to be a child of God."
