Navy Mentor Program
by Curtis Doucette, Jr.
The
Navy Mentor Program is a voluntary organization developed to assist those
officers who do not have convenient or direct access to an experienced mentor.
This is especially important in light of the 21st century’s
expanding technologies, changing demographics, and reduced budgets.
These circumstances make it necessary to retain officers as well as
prepare them for the challenges that await them.
The program brings together higher officials of
diverse Navy backgrounds with officers desiring to meet today’s demands.
The intention here is not to replace the chain of command.
Rather, it is intended to supplement an officer’s career tool belt with
a network of Navy leaders whose individual experiences may closely match the
unique situation and background of a “mentee.”
This approach is used to instill self-confidence in the protégé. This
leads to the increased likelihood of job success; greater job satisfaction and
higher productivity; targeted development of skills and increased awareness of
the organization, its mission, and the individual’s importance to its success.
The Navy Mentor Program benefits not only the individual but the
organization as a whole by increasing productivity, improving morale, enhancing
team building, and increasing organizational communication and understanding.
The program is the result of an initiative to renew the Navy’s focus on
its greatest asset, their men and women.
