Sonia Sanchez

Dramatist, playwright, poet, lecturer and editor; Sanchez has written several children's books. Born Wilsonia Benita Driver on September 9, 1934 in Birmingham, AL, Sanchez has been a political activist for Black culture, racial justice and women's liberation. 

Sanchez writes poetry with revolutionary language, but uses traditional language in discussing war, pain and politics. Sanchez has taught and lectured at universities across the country and is presently at Temple University as poet-in-residence and professor of English. 

Sanchez won the P.E.N. Writing Award in 1969, the National Academy of Arts and Letters Award, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1978-79, and the National Education Association Award in 1977-88. For Homegirls and Handgrenades, Sanchez won an American Book Award for Poetry in 1985.
